Choosing a Mold Lab: Accreditation, Turnaround, and Cost

Every lab's website promises fast, accurate, trusted results. The features that actually change whether your report holds up are narrower than the marketing, and they come in a clear order of priority.

How do you choose a mold lab?

In priority order: confirm AIHA EMLAP accreditation for the analysis you need, check the standard and rush turnaround times, then weigh cost. Accreditation comes first because it is the recognized signal that the lab's fungal analysis meets a vetted quality standard, and it is what gives the result credibility in a dispute (AIHA, Laboratory Accreditation Programs).

Speed and price matter, but they are secondary to whether the lab is accredited for the method. A fast, cheap result from an unaccredited lab is a liability dressed up as a bargain.

Why does AIHA EMLAP accreditation come first?

Because accreditation is the difference between a number you can defend and one you cannot. The AIHA Laboratory Accreditation Programs maintain the Environmental Microbiology Laboratory Accreditation Program (EMLAP) that covers fungal analysis, and naming an EMLAP-accredited lab in your report is a credibility signal to clients, insurers, and opposing experts (AIHA, Laboratory Accreditation Programs).

It also pairs with your chain of custody. Accreditation establishes the analysis was sound; the custody record establishes the sample was yours — one without the other leaves a gap a dispute will find (EPA, Mold Remediation in Schools and Commercial Buildings). Confirm the lab is accredited for the specific analysis (direct microscopy spore counts, culturable, qPCR) you are ordering, not just accredited in general. The custody side is in chain of custody for mold samples.

What turnaround times should you expect?

Standard fungal analysis commonly turns around in a few business days, with most labs offering rush options — often same-day or next-day — at a premium. For a routine assessment, standard turnaround is fine; for a time-sensitive insurance claim, real-estate deadline, or post-remediation clearance, the rush tier earns its surcharge by getting the report out in time.

Build the timeline into your quote. A client expecting a report this week needs to know whether you ordered standard or rush analysis, because the lab's turnaround sets the floor on your delivery date. Confirm the lab runs the method you specified — a direct-microscopy spore-trap analysis follows ASTM D7391, and the report should state the method run so your narrative matches it (ASTM International, D7391).

How much should lab analysis cost, and does cheaper mean worse?

Per-sample analysis fees vary by method and lab, with culturable and molecular methods generally costing more than a direct-microscopy spore count, and rush turnaround adding a premium. Cheaper is not automatically worse — but an unaccredited lab undercutting on price is a false economy, because the savings vanish the moment the result is challenged.

Pick on accreditation and turnaround fit first, then let price break a tie among comparable accredited labs. Standardize on one or two accredited labs you trust so your method, units, and report format stay consistent across jobs, which makes your own reporting cleaner and your results comparable over time (AIHA, Green Book).

MoldMind ingests structured results from whichever accredited lab you use, normalizing method, genus, count, and units into the report so switching labs does not break your report format. See the sample report and how to read a lab report.
